'Unbe'leena'ble' Daredevil Truck

0 0441dBy George L. Nitti

At the 30th annual American Towman Exposition in Baltimore in November, there were many outstanding tow trucks entered in its American Wrecker Pageant.

This year, Magill's Towing and Auto Service of Monroeville, Pennsylvania, made a 10-hour journey through snow to showcase their 2018 Freightliner M2/Chevron 512 that won first place in the 2018 Medium Duty class.

Owner Mark Magill, who did the layout and custom paint, said, "This was my seventh or eighth year at the Expo. We entered one of our trucks in 2016 and won first place. I wanted to enter it again. I learned a lot from that experience and felt my painting skills had improved."

Like many of Magill's tow trucks, the inspiration behind this award-winner was once again a character from Marvel Comics.

"Many of my trucks are superhero-themed," Magill said. "I have been watching the 'Daredevil' series on Netflix, which was the inspiration for this truck."

At the heart of the design are several cityscapes that include Pittsburgh, Chicago and New York, pitched against a metallic red background that matches the series' cover art.

"I wanted to fill up the length of the truck," Magill said. "There are a lot of buildings on there and I didn't want to reuse the same ones. I didn't want standard block buildings. The Statue of Liberty is also on there."

The design wouldn't be complete without a replication of the Daredevil character himself, who is found in the center of the hood and on the sides. The license plate on the front of the unit memorializes Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee, who recently passed away.

Technically there is a lot to the design process, including taping, masking, cutting and airbrushing.

"It took about a week to prep and 18 to 19 hours to paint," Magill said. "Everything was masked. Before I was doing it by hand; but now the design is created by a company and then cut out with a razor blade. Then it is laid out over the unit and painted. I also taped off the white tears and airbrushed under them."

At the pageant, Magill noted that many people mistook it for a wrap.

"The lines are so crisp from the spray mask," he said. "The best compliment I got at the show was when people went up to the truck and felt it to see if it was really paint."

Dedicated to his second daughter Leena, the back of the unit contains the phrase, "Unbe'leena'ble." Magill said it's a family tradition. "I was "Re-'mark'-able" when my father named one of his trucks after me."
